12-Step Recovery

The 12-step recovery program offers a structured model that fosters peer support, accountability, and spiritual growth. Through regular meetings and a clear set of principles, individuals find guidance as they work to maintain sobriety. At MLB Recovery, our outpatient addiction programs integrate the 12 steps to strengthen accountability, encourage personal inventory, and build a foundation for lasting healing.

What Is a 12-Step Addiction Recovery Program?

A 12-step program consists of a series of steps that guide individuals through recovery, emphasizing self-examination, acceptance, behavior change, and service to others. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) originally developed this approach, and since then, many organizations have adapted it for various substance use and behavioral disorders. By attending regular peer-led meetings, participants can explore the core goals of sustained change and personal accountability. Although the original text uses spiritual language, the program can be tailored to align with each person’s beliefs.

Another key element of the 12-step recovery program is the sponsor-sponsee dynamic. Typically, sponsors are individuals who have completed the 12 steps and achieved lasting recovery, so they take on a mentorship role and act as a resource for sponsees and newcomers.

Key Benefits of a 12-step Program Include:

  • Structured, step-by-step guidance to support behavior change
  • Peer-led meetings that encourage accountability and shared experience
  • Emphasis on developing coping strategies to prevent relapse
  • Regular participation that maintains engagement in recovery
  • Support for emotional and spiritual growth that reinforces sobriety

What Are The Twelve Steps?

The 12 steps are a set of actions that guide individuals through recovery, promoting self-awareness, connection, and hope. The steps include:

  1. We admit we are powerless over our addiction and that our lives have become unmanageable.

  2. We come to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.

  3. We decide to turn our will and our lives over to the care of that higher power.

  4. We make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

  5. We admit to the higher power, to ourselves, and to another person the exact nature of our wrongs.

  6. We become entirely ready to have the higher power remove all these defects of character.

  7. We humbly ask the higher power to remove our shortcomings.

  8. We make a list of all persons we have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.

  9. We make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.

  10. We continue to take personal inventory, and when we are wrong, we promptly admit it.

  11. We seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with the higher power, praying for knowledge and the power to carry out its will.

  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to others and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

What to Expect in a 12-Step Meeting

12-step meetings provide a safe and confidential space where people in recovery come together to share their experiences. Although the format may vary, most meetings begin with a reading of the steps and basic guidelines of the program. Some meetings feature a speaker, while others are open for group discussion, which allows attendees to connect and learn from each other.

There is no pressure to speak; attendees are welcome to share or simply listen. Those who do share often talk about personal challenges, recovery milestones, or lessons from daily life, which encourages honesty and personal growth. Meetings usually close with the Serenity Prayer or a brief reflection, so participants leave with a sense of support and understanding. Overall, these gatherings offer a supportive environment filled with individuals who understand the realities of addiction and recovery.

How the 12-Step Program Can Help During Recovery

At MLB Recovery, patients are encouraged, but not required, to utilize the 12 steps. They can implement the 12 steps throughout their recovery in a number of ways. This may include:

  • On-site or local AA or NA meetings
  • Peer-led discussion groups
  • Journaling and self-reflection
  • Meeting with sober mentors or alumni
  • Goal alignment between the 12 steps and individual therapy
